Amity Wins One, Loses Two In Football

The Amity High School football

team this season usually has

had no trouble scoring points.

Against Fairfield Prep, Amity

scored 33 points, and against

Wilbur Cross, Amity put another

44 points on the scoreboard.

But Amity only won one of

those games. Amity defeated

Wilbur Cross 44-15, but lost to

Prep 46-33. In a game against

Cheshire on Nov. 8, Amity only

scored 13 points, so it’s no surprise

the team lost 34-13.

Against Prep, Amity quarterback

Dave Ryan threw four

touchdowns, and ran for another

score. Ryan completed a school

record 40 passes for 431 yards,

while Tyler Burns caught a

school record 19 passes for 176

yards and a touchdown.

“Dave Ryan had one of the

best efforts in the state with a

record 40 completions,” said Bert

Mozealous, who is the head football

coach. “We’re pleased with

him. I wish we had him one more

year.”

Against Prep, Amity had the

ball in scoring position four times

in the first half but scored just

one touchdown.

“That really hurt us,” Mozealous

said. “During the second half

we played well.”

But Amity’s defense had a

chance to stop Prep and get the

ball back with a chance to tie, but

they yielded a touchdown.

“We couldn’t hold them,”

Mozealous said. “It was a backand-

forth game. They have very

good running backs.”

Mozealous said he’s pleased

with his team’s effort, but is disappointed

Amity dropped a

winnable game.

“We’re disappointed in the result

but not the kids effort,”

Mozealous said.

Against Wilbur Cross, Amity

blew the game open in the fourth

quarter. The coach said Amity

made fewer mistakes than the opponent.

Wilbur Cross incurred several

fumbles on snaps between the

center and quarterback that Amity

recovered. Mouzealous said the

final score makes it look like the

game was lopsided, but in reality

the game was much closer.

After nine games, the coach,

said the team continues to give

maximum effort. He said problems

remain on defense as the

team graduated its starting defensive

and offensive lines last year.

It’s been hard to replace those

players, the coach said.

“We haven’t been consistent,”

Mouzealous said. “We fall behind

and we haven’t put a whole game

together on offense and defense.”

Mouzealous said Ryan deserves

tremendous credit for

shouldering a brunt of the offense.

Against Wilbur Cross, Ryan

threw two more touchdowns, and

David Buono ran for 102 yards

and a touchdown. Spencer

Thomas and Joseph Choiniere

also had rushing touchdowns

against Wilbur Cross. Burns and

Thomas had interceptions in the

game.

Against Cheshire, Thomas returned

a kick 85 yards for a

touchdown, and Ben Feola caught

a 19 yard pass from Ryan for a

touchdown. But it wasn’t enough.
