Why Hypnosis Is Effective On Children

The mind, at birth, is like a blank hard drive of a computer. All life experiences, the good, the bad and the ugly, become the programming. Until age 8 or 9 a child does not have the conscious, critical factor of the mind to distinguish the difference between reality and fantasy, hence the belief in Santa Claus. Children are continuously programmed through their life experiences. Because their mind cannot distinguish between reality and fantasy, all these experiences have negative potential. When children, for example, witness fighting and yelling at home, or see a scary movie, they can develop fears and anxieties that may not surface for years.

What if you could use this information to program your children in a positive way?

Hypnosis is the process of bypassing the conscious mind to communicate with the subconscious mind. Since young children do not have a critical mind, they are technically in a mild state of hypnosis. As a parent, you can use this to positively program your children. The most effective time to do this is bedtime as it is a special time with your child without distractions. You can give them positive affirmations like, “I am so proud of the way you love to read,” or “I love the way you enjoy learning new things.” It doesn’t need to be true at the time. Repeating it several times creates a new reality for the child.

A woman came to me for weight loss. She mentioned that she could not sleep because her children, ages 2 and 4, would wake up and come into her bed. I instructed her that each night at bedtime to say to each child, “Mommy is so proud of the way you sleep all night without waking up, but if you do wake up, you just grab your blanket, or teddy, turn over, and go right back to sleep easily and immediately.” It worked the first time she did it.

Many of my colleagues with young children have reported using this successfully with their own children to improve self -esteem. Repetition is an important part of the process and it is a process.

Children are very excellent subjects for hypnosis because their imaginations are so vivid. I have successfully worked with children for many issues including bed wetting, fears, and improving self esteem.

I had a 12 year old client who plays squash and is nationally ranked. He wanted to improve his performance because sometimes he would choke up against certain opponents. With hypnosis I was able to get him to answer each of his opponents points with 3 more of his own by getting fired up using the power of his favorite super hero!

His self-confidence has improved in many areas of his life using a “power button” I gave him for dealing with difficult kids in school.

Hypnosis is a very effective modality for helping children to deal with the challenges of life that sometimes seem overwhelming.  Whether the challenges are academic, sports related, bad habits or just poor self esteem, using hypnosis the mind  can be changed.
