Betty lived in Milford all of her life. She was the Daughter of the late James K. Dooling and Elizabeth J. (Tice) Dooling. She is survived by her Husband George Sr., her Son George Jr., her Daughter Donna (Anderson) Holden, her Son-In-Law Terry Holden, Jr., and her two Granddaughters Brianne & Alyssa. She was preceded by her Mother, Father, Sister Joan (Dooling) Ball, Brother-In-Law Craig Anderson, and Sister-In-Law Carlyn Schultheiss. Betty was one of the “Beach Kids”, attended Walnut Beach Grammar School and graduated Milford High School in 1957. Her first job was at W.T. Grants Department Store in the Center of Town. Shortly thereafter, she went to work at the A & P Grocery Store on River Street. This was a prime spot for teens to work, setting the stage for Betty to meet George who had worked there two years before. They met at the A & P summer outing on August 27, 1956 and since that time have never left each other’s side.

When Betty graduated from high school, she was one of three students from the Business Department hired by Raybestos in Stratford, one of the largest employers in the area. She worked there for four years before she had her son, George Jr. After he was born, she went to work for two years before leaving to have her daughter. Betty went back to work after Donna’s birth for a land appraiser in Milford. This office was next to Attorney John Jaser, a political figure in town. Betty then worked for Jay Jaser for the new redevelopment agency located at Walnut Beach. After this project was over, she went to work for the Milford Family & Child Guidance Center, which later became the Milford Mental Health Clinic now known as Bridges. She worked there for over 25 years becoming Office Manager. During that time, the clinic went through a major expansion and Betty was the one who had to work with the contractors to get the job done. To do this and to keep the project moving forward, she also worked nights and weekends working 60-70 hours per week. After the completion of this project, she was offered the job as Office Manager at Care Source, a home care nursing service. In 1997, she suffered a stroke but recovered after 3 weeks of intensive rehab and was able to go back to work. Betty was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and an active participant in St. Gabriel’s Variety Shows in singing and dancing skits. She helped with costumes and sets for five years. She was a Dance Mom, Makeup Artist for several Carol Farrell Dance Studio shows taking care of over 100 dancers per show.

She loved to travel, her and the family would get into the car and drive to anywhere, Bar Harbor Maine, Killington Vermont and Loon Mountain on ski trips. We went to the Battleship Museum in MA, Nashville, New Orleans, Memphis to visit Graceland. Betty was forever a huge Elvis fan and took the family to see Elvis perform at Veteran’s Coliseum. We went on numerous trips to Disney World, sometimes twice a year. She loved Christmas in Disney World and also New Year’s Eve. Florida was her favorite destination. We will miss her so very much. She is the Best Person on the Planet. She was always the most positive and optimistic and beautiful Wife, Mom and Grandmother ever.

Kovacs, Douglas James

Douglas James Kovacs, born October 5, 1963 returned to pure loving energy on Saturday, July 3, 2021.

Douglas is survived by his former wife and best friend, Jean; their two sons, Andrew Justin (Christina) and Christopher Allen-Michael (Kaylah). He leaves his sister, Semantha Norton of Milford and many cousins and other family members as well as his best friend, James Stevens.

He was predeceased by his mother, Linnea Engstrom Peterson; his father, James Charles Kovacs; his step-father, Carl Peterson; maternal grandparents, Alice and Karl Engstrom; and paternal grandmother, Katherine Rome.

When asked to define success, he would say his best attributes were his children who he considered to be his greatest work of art. He also was an inspirational floral designer, specializing in wedding design and event planning. He had a dream of opening a candy store or doing something that people would find happiness in. Later in his life, he found serenity in gardening. He truly loved cooking for family and friends and sharing the time together. When he came out to family in his mid-thirties, he found a new sense of appreciation for life. He finally was free to live as he’d always wanted; however, he would say, “The grass isn’t greener on the other side. It’s Astro-turf ‘cause we know how to decorate!” He was full of life, sometimes sarcastic, temperamental, but always appreciative and wanting to give back to those who needed a helping hand. His passion and love for life were slightly held back by his back injury, but he never let it stop him. With a smile, he’d keep moving forward. A lover of inspirational quotes, he would always try to pass on a smile or a hug to anyone who seemed to need one. His presence will be truly missed, but his legacy will forever live on through all he touched!

A Celebration of his life will be held on a later date. He has requested, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in his honor to: Pet Rescues, Animal Shelters, Soup Kitchens or Food Pantries.

LaPlante, Edward

Edward Charles LaPlante, 71, of Milford, beloved husband of Carol Head LaPlante, passed into eternal rest on July 6, 2021. Born on August 6, 1949, he was the son of the late Marjorie LaPlante and the late Charles LaPlant. Ed graduated from Jonathan Law High School in 1968, and enlisted in the United States Navy where he earned certification from the Navy’s Fire Fighters’ School, and served proudly aboard the USS Nipmuc. Ed received the National Defense Service Medal, and was unabashedly patriotic.

It was one of the happiest days of Ed’s life when he donned the uniform of firefighter for the City of Milford, on December 1, 1975. Ed treasured his profession, and rose to the rank of Captain. He served as IAFF Local 944 President, and was an EMT, and active participant in the MFD Water Rescue Team and Ice Rescue Team. Ed’s late father-in-law, Battalion Chief Raymond Head, was his mentor and Brother Fire Fighter.

One could not think of Ed without knowing how much the sea had always called him – even as a youngster when he was intrigued by Charles Island. His love of smelling the salt air, fishing, and marveling at the serenity of a glassy sea filled him with joy, and brought him closer to his God.

Along with his devoted wife, Ed leaves behind his precious children, Jaclyn Lee, and her fiancée, Ralphie Rivera, and Brian Raymond. Ed cherished his daughter and son, and his boundless love for them was a constant source of steadfast devotion. His children witnessed each day what it meant to be a decent and compassionate man. Ed’s gentleness was obvious throughout his life as he cared for his cherished Labs: Shanna, Lana, Riley, Liberty, and Justice as well as Sean, his much-loved Irish Setter.

Ed is survived by his sister, Ellen Griffin, and by his sisters-in-law Laurie Glenn, and her husband, George; and Renee Head. He is survived by his brother, Clinton LaPlant, and by several nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his beloved brother, David LaPlante.

Ed and Carol would have been together for 53 years in October. He was 19 years old, and Carol was 15 years old. Words cannot capture what they meant to each other. He will forever be her “Eddie, My Love,” and she will forever be his “Carol Ann”.

Mathisen, Michael

Michael Mathisen lived a full life, staying remarkably active, strong, and sharp for 94 years. He never slowed down even in his 90’s, when he got a golden retriever puppy, continued to climb on ladders, restore antique cars, and go on road trips to visit family in North Carolina. His cancer diagnosis in mid-June came as a surprise and he passed away peacefully in his home on July 26, 2021, after his family provided loving care for a month.

He was born on June 5, 1927 in Chicago, IL, to Mikal and Anna Mathisen, who were both born in Norway and met in Chicago. As a young boy in 1935, he moved to his father’s family farm on the coast in Sirevag, Norway with his parents and younger sister Ruth, returning to Chicago in 1938. After those three formative years, Michael always held a deep love for his Norwegian roots and relatives.

He joined the Navy at the age of 17 in 1944 and served in the pacific during WWII. He was called back to service in the Korean War. It was between his active service that he met Bernice Jorgensen, a fellow Norwegian-American, at a church dance back home in Chicago. They were married in that church in 1950 and celebrated 67 devoted years of love and life together. They raised their two sons, Mark and Brian, in Deerfield, IL.

While living in Deerfield he worked for ITT Harper for 30 years, where he excelled as Chief Engineer in the manufacturing of specialty steel fasteners and metal extrusions. He went on to be co-owner and President of Manufacturing at Extrusion Technology Corporation of America which manufactured specialty metals for the aerospace and defense industries. He and his co-founders moved the company to Bridgeport, CT which brought Michael and Bernice to their home in Orange where they were involved in the local community for over 35 years.

Michael and Bernice were active members of the Orange Congregational Church, where Michael spent many years volunteering to help to maintain the historic building. They were also longtime members in the Sons of Norway organization and the Connecticut Historic Auto Society. He was deeply admired by friends and family as an extraordinary craftsman who could build or fix anything, from any time period. He brought life back into antique cars, radios, and clocks, that will be treasured by family and friends. He did everything from building a wooden boat, to full restoration of antique automobiles, and always had a maintenance or building project going on around his property or community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Bernice Mathisen, and his sister, Ruth Almeroth. Michael is survived by two sons, Mark (Sonja) Mathisen, and Brian Mathisen; two grandchildren, Maren and Kirsten Mathisen. Both Michael and his wife shared a love of Norwegian culture, passing traditions and knowledge of their ancestry down to their sons and granddaughters.

Powell, Kristen

Kristen Kay Powell, 67, of Orange, beloved wife of 44 years to David Lawrence Powell, passed away peacefully at home on July 25, 2021. Born on January 8, 1954 in Cleveland, OH, she was the daughter of the late Carmen and Jean Cozza.
Kristen Kay Cozza Powell was beloved by all who had the privilege of knowing her and was in an elite class of her own volition. “Kristy” as her family called her was born to be a nurse. She was protective of her two younger siblings and enjoyed taking care of them. Kristy prided herself as being the “mother to all” and devoted her life to making others’ lives better. As her parents aged, she spent countless hours tending to their needs even when her own health began to fail and her loyalty to those she loved will forever be unmatched. Since her “Daddy” was the head football coach of Yale, it goes without saying how she was Yale’s biggest fan until her final hour.

With 12 years on the Orange BOE and PTA President at Race Brook School, Kristy loved being around children. She went to Yale School of Nursing and was a proud member of the newborn special care unit who specialized in the “failure to thrive” infants who needed a little extra love and attention. Her selflessness would carry into her marriage to her husband David Powell. Their engagement in the nursery with her holding two boys would foreshadow her own life as a mother to be. Being a Navy wife was not without its challenges, but the adventures around the world with her “Dave” made it special nonetheless.

As her children began to grow, she opened her home to everyone and would have countless dinner parties and sleepovers for all of her sons’ friends. Anyone who walked in the door was offered her famous “magic bars,” which was her signature treat along with her infectious smile. Holiday decorating and tailgates were among her favorite times and she would often look back on those “hectic” times with such fondness. During her free time, she loved to swim and never missed an episode of the Golden Girls and Everybody Loves Raymond, for laughter she felt was the cure to all ailments.

Being a mother to Michael (Mikey) and Mark (Markie) or “M and M” as she called her 15 month apart bookends was by far her greatest joy and devotion. RBS, Amity, NDWH, SRU and Lafayette College would not have been the same without her loving image and presence. It has been said that everyone has the best: mother, sister, daughter, niece, cousin and friend; however, Kristen Cozza Powell was and will continue to be unmatched for her love was truly in a league of their own.

She attended Calf Pen Meadow Elementary School and then graduated from Milford High School, Class of 1952.  A proud member of her sorority – Sigma Alpha Pi, she always talked about the school’s sorority and fraternity parties.  She saved just about every sporting event ticket and all her dance cards.  One of her fondest memories at Milford High, was being crowned queen of the 1951 Junior prom at 16 years old. In 2017, a mere 66 years later, her granddaughter Quinn Lofthouse was also crowned queen of her junior prom, which Joanne was very proud of.

Her first job was selling candy at the former Capitol Theater movie concession.  This fueled her love for old movies, which has transcended to her children.  Gone With the Wind, and Withering Heights, these were just 2 of her all-time-favorites.

On September 8, 1956 Joanne Married Stanly Leonard Lofthouse, a native of Devon.  Together they had two children, their daughter Leslie Ann Lofthouse was born January 20, 1959 and their son Mark Stanley Lofthouse arrived on May 25, 1961.  She was widowed in 1979.

In the early 70’s she was the switchboard operator for Milford Hospital, sales gal at Pace Setter East dress shop on Daniel St., and then she worked for over 20 years and retired from the City of Milford, as an administrator in the Building Inspection Dept.  This is where she met her 2nd husband, David Olmstead, they were married for 21 years, after Dave’s passing in 2001.

In 2006 she met Wayne Lorincz and they were together until her passing.

Joanne was a Brownie leader, a Cub Scout den mother, PTA Chairperson at Fort Trumbull Elementary School, and an active member of the Milford Elks Lodge especially during her husband Dave’s tenure as Exalted Ruler.

When Dave became ill, she took up decorative painting of bird houses, her “therapy”.  Having always been artistic, she had a of collection her “own” fashion sketches, paintings, embroidery, homemade birthday cakes were always elaborate, and even snow sculping “was a thing” when she was in her early 30’s.  She enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, making Xmas cookies, dancing (when she could), going to the casino, traveling (Myrtle Beach, SC & Ogunquit, ME) especially.  She enjoyed talking to people of all walks of life.

Quotes:

“I have seen of the world a lot of beauty and good people”.

“I will always be glad that I was born surrounded by loving family members and I had loving, and caring husbands and children.”

“My best years have been that I have enjoyed my life – no regrets and I feel that I have been Blessed”.
