Comer, Robert John

Robert John Comer (Rod Ice), 79, of Milford, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2021. Born on August 2, 1941 in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late John and Annie (Guerin) Comer.

The original plan for Rod Ice’s departure was to let him go on a walk about on a cold winter’s day with a nice scotch and pull a “Here’s Johnny.” Obviously, God had different plans after his cocktail party on Friday night with his closest friends.

The best way to remember Bobby is to pour a road soda, listen to a Johnny Mathis song, put on a cowboy hat and jump in a kayak, dance, dance, dance, hug someone and make it count.

Since this family has an attachment disorder, Rod Ice is going to be cremated and continue his weekly cocktail hour with us. If you want to celebrate Rod Ice, since he decided the cocktails up above have a better pour, please raise one for him and tell someone that you love them. Make sure it’s a good pour and with someone you love, because in Rod Ice’s own words, “Nothing is more important than family”.

Isdale, Ian

1927-2021. Dates with a dash. Summarizing a life of places and names, but fails to convey the joy in life and innate kindness that was embodied by Ian Isdale of North Branford, formerly of Orange, CT and Ashfield, MA.

The world lost a bit of sunlight when Ian passed on February 5, 2021 after a courageous battle with a glioblastoma leaving behind such precious memories and ragged holes in the hearts of all those that knew and loved him.

Ian was the only child of John Skinner Isdale, inventor of the Gillette Adjustable Safety Razor, and Winifred Clara Gillingham Isdale of Meriden, CT.   Ian was, above all, truly a good man. He was kind, he loved his family, his friends, his country, and always had a smile and tried to be of good cheer. He was quiet, intellectually curious, and engaged in technology throughout his life. He was proud of his service in the US Army Air Corps and maintained his love of radios throughout his life. He graduated from Tri-State College in Angola, IN, returning to CT and marrying his dear Mary Ann Kinne in 1950.

They had a long and happy marriage, first living in New Haven and then Orange, and raising three children together. Ian had a great career with travel beyond what he ever expected, employed by Honeywell, Beckman Instruments, Bell & Howell Microcircuits, Ledu, then with his own independent sales rep business.

He enjoyed camping, sailing on Long Island Sound, and always could be found in his workshop or garage surrounded by his latest projects, continuing to tinker and repair radios, and anything else that needed fixing until shortly before his death.  He loved Mozart, Bach, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.  He always enjoyed attending a country fair, especially the Orange Agricultural Fair where he would show his Corvairs or tractors, and enjoyed working in the Historical Tool Booth explaining what each tool was used for and talking with everyone.

Ian’s happy place was a farm in Ashfield, MA which he and Mary Ann purchased in the late 1970s and spent many happy days. Ian could always be found working with his tractors in the meadows and woods. He met his mid-life nemesis with a family of beavers and they continued a good-natured rivalry for ownership of the creek. The beavers won and Ian learned to enjoy the birds and wildflowers that flourished in his lost meadow, now a marsh.

In 2010, they moved to Evergreen Woods where Ian took on leadership roles within the community, reconnected with old friends, and made many new ones. After the loss of Mary Ann in 2016, Ian stayed active, enjoying walks, and continuing to work his farm as long as possible.

Ian’s predisposition for kindness with no strings attached had a huge impact on his family who remains immensely grateful for his presence in their lives and the joys he shared. He is survived by son, John (Jolene) Isdale of Newtown, CT, son, Gerald Isdale of Haiku, Maui, HI, daughter,   M. Holly Isdale of Hawley, PA and NYC, NY;  grandchildren: Abby Ryan, Jack Ryan, Eddy Isdale, Brian Isdale, Justin (Paty) Durelli, Jennifer Durelli and Hayley Isdale, several nieces, nephews and numerous friends.

We offer our sincere thanks to the many friends who visited or called Ian during the COVID lockdown and his illness, his doctors and nurses at Yale New Haven Oncology and at Connecticut Hospice were without peer in his journey. We are especially grateful to Iris Kuerbitz and Carolyn Proctor for their friendship, love and care they provided to him.

A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate Ian’s life and allow us to gather free of COVID restrictions. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Orange Congregational Church Nursery School.

Born December 1, 1934 in the coal-mining town of Thorpe, West Virginia, he was the only son of Dennis and Edna Law and cherished grandson of Zera Taylor.

After serving 10 years in the United States Air Force, he graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Business Management from Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio and a Master’s Degree in City and Regional Planning from Ohio State, which led him to become an avid Buckeye football fan.

He was the proud father of Sheryl Abernathy of Columbus, Ohio, Donald Law of Louisville, Kentucky, Letitia Stones of Lakeland, Florida and Yvette Law of New Britain, Connecticut and grandfather to John Harrington Jr. and Sharina Harrington of Columbus. Curt had five great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He is beloved by Paul Mayer, Candace’s brother and Janet LeDoyen, her sister, nephews and niece and great nephews and nieces.

Curt was a voracious life-long learner, especially when it came to his passions for photography, golf, and saxophone. He read insatiably, took classes and private instruction continually, shared enthusiastically and practiced joyfully! He and Candace had photography work accepted online by Social Documentary Network, entitled “Bridgeport CT in the Time of COVID-19.”

Together he and Candace created peaceful and glorious gardens at their home. They savored spending time tending, enhancing, putzing and luxuriating there, often enjoying meals together or with family and friends, or reading by the fountain. Summertime would also find them basking outside, picnicking with friends at jazz or classical concerts, at the beach, or enjoying walks through downtown.

As the Executive Director of the Norwalk Housing Authority for 43 years, his accomplishments were recognized as being among some of the best in the nation, bringing recognition to the agency and its staff. Curt’s vision of supporting residents in their efforts to achieve a life of prosperity and financial independence led him to develop educational programs for public housing residents that extended from kindergarten through graduate school. This culture of educational achievement led to the formation of what grew to become the largest and most generous college and graduate school public housing scholarship program in the nation. Students from Norwalk Housing not only studied locally, many traveled to other states and some to other countries for their education. While students of the program included several who achieved advanced degrees, Curt was as proud of the chef who memorized all his recipes to overcome his learning challenges as he was of the medical doctor. The college scholarship program received praise from the Harvard Business School Club of Fairfield County when it conducted an in-depth study of the outcome of scholarship recipients.

Curt received local, state and federal awards but was most proud of receiving the M. Justin Herman Memorial Award for the Outstanding Professional of the Year from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials in 2014. This award was an acknowledgement of Curt as an innovator and leader who redefined public housing from its narrow role of housing provider to a broader vehicle that included easily accessible education and job training for all family members. Housing became a launching pad rather than a landing place under his direction.

A firm believer in “if you don’t try, you won’t succeed,” and despite knowledgeable professional advice to the contrary, he choose to apply for HUD’s highly competitive national Choice Neighborhood Program. In 2014, Norwalk received one of only three nationwide $30 million awards that transformed Washington Village, Connecticut’s oldest public housing site into Soundview Landing, a vibrant mixed-income community. HUD’s Choice Neighborhood grant to the Housing Authority is the largest grant ever received in Norwalk. Soundview Landing, costing a total of 185 million dollars, has resulted in over 600 million dollars of new investment in the neighborhood and improved the lives of many Washington Village families.

While a warrior, Curt was always a Gentleman Crusader who attracted talented people to embrace his vision and dedicate their work to his quest. He lives on in the people’s lives who will forever breathe easier because he has lived. He has made us all better people.
Funeral services are private. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Housatonic Community College Foundation, 900 Lafayette Blvd, Bridgeport, CT 06604, for scholarships for students pursuing an Art degree where Curt studied. The family is being compassionately cared for by Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford, CT. To leave online condolences, please visit our website at www.codywhitefuneralservice.com.

Raffone, Joseph A.

Joseph A. Raffone was a larger than life person. If Joe was in your life, you knew you were surely blessed. Generous, kind, and caring, you could always count on Joe! There was no problem that Joe couldn’t solve, no person that Joe couldn’t convert to a friend, and no challenge in life that was left unmet.

An Italian-American with a Grand Avenue swagger, Joe had a precise aim on any target that caught his attention, especially the love of his life, Carol P. Raffone. Joey and Carol, married for almost 50 years, opened Rite-Way Alarms, Inc. where many customers became part of the family. Everyone in town eventually made Rite-Way’s famous “picture wall.” Rite-Way was his baby, but let’s be clear, nobody came before Joe’s daughters Krissy (Kristin Raffone Vazquez of Draper, Utah) and Nina (Jeannine Raffone Dwyer (James P. Dwyer) of Lumberton, New Jersey). Papa Joe instilled his girls with Raffone family values that he learned alongside his siblings Eugene E. Raffone (Phyllis Raffone) of Orange, Connecticut; Lawrence Raffone (Barbara Raffone) of Milford, Connecticut; and Roberta Niwore (Ernest Niwore) of New Haven, Connecticut.

Papa Joe’s legacy continues in his grandchildren: Carolyn Angel Vazquez (17) and Arianna Noel Vazquez (13) of Draper, Utah and Sophia Marie Dwyer (15); Autumn Noelle Dwyer (13); and James P. Dwyer (11) of Lumberton, New Jersey.

Papa Joe loved fishing derbies, Sunday sauce and meatballs, fast cars, Godfather movies, his Pepsi-Cola glass (although he preferred Coca-Cola in a glass bottle), sketching, and praying his morning rosary.

His family appreciates and respects the companionship of Catherine Prete and the special bond Joe had with his “son” Jason Michaud. The family also acknowledges everyone reading this. You know how special each of you were to him.

As we raise a glass of Amaretto on the rocks…we say, “Here’s looking at you, Joe!”
A private, immediate family only service will be livestreamed on Wednesday, January 20, 2021. To view livestream please visit https://oneroomstreaming.com/ and use Event ID: Codywhitefh and Password: WNDGUQ.
