Arnold, Richard

The Honorable Richard E. Arnold, age 72, of Orange, the beloved husband of 33 years to Karen Kanawall Arnold , entered into eternal rest peacefully on June 1, 2021, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was born in Bridgeport on October 11, 1948, loving son of the late Ernest and Ruth Crosthwait Arnold.

Rich was a graduate of Warren Harding High School where he played football, baseball and basketball. He received many academic awards and graduated with the class of 1966. Rich went to the University of Connecticut inStorrs and in 1970 he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree before attending the New England School of Law in Boston where he received a Juris Doctor degree in 1974. After Graduation, Rich worked as an assistant clerk in the CT Circuit Court System before opening his own practice in 1975. After many successful years, he had the honor of being appointed a Judge of the Connecticut Superior Court in 1996. He loved being a Judge and proudly served for 25 years. Rich presided over many high-profile cases in both the Bridgeport and Milford Courts. Rich never really retired and up to his last days, he did short calendar, zoomed court cases during the pandemic and wrote decisions.

Rich was twice nominated by the CT Republican Party as their candidate for State Attorney General in 1986 against Joseph Lieberman and in 1994 against Richard Blumenthal. He served as a Selectman in the town of Orange where he lived. Before his nomination to the Superior Court, he was the State Chairman of the Connecticut Republican party and was a member of the Republican Nation Committee. Rich also worked on the presidential Campaign of Senator Robert Dole.

He served on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Diabetes Association, the Greater Bridgeport Council on Alcoholism, the Orange Park and Recreation Commission, and was the town Moderator for Orange. Rich was also a member of the CT. Bar Association, the Orange Republican Town Committee and the Republican State Central Committee.

Rich lived in the moment, enjoying all that life had to offer. He loved his family and his friends, and he had a passion for golf. Rich loved to play with his golf “brothers” at Orange Hills Country Club and he served on the Men’s Association as their Secretary. Orange Hills was his home away from home. He golfed every Friday and Saturday, and when invited he played at various other golf courses. Most of all, Rich’s greatest love was his family and his wife Karen. He cherished the time he spent with them, especially the many summer trips to Hilton Head Island where they got married. Rich will be sadly missed by all, but will remain forever in our hearts.

Rich’s loving family in addition to his wife Karen includes his daughter Lindsey Alexandra Arnold, his son Kenneth Joseph Shelinsky and his wife Stephanie, his three brothers Anthony, Paul and Ernie Arnold and the apple of his eye, his grandson Jackson Shelinsky, better known to him as “Captain Jack”.

Bobrovszky, Amalia

Amalia Bobrovszky, 94, of Milford, beloved wife of the late Norbert Bobrovszky, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2021. Amalia was born on June 19, 1926 in Komarom, Czechoslovakia to the late Janos and Helen Molnar.

Amalia married her betrothed Norbert and lived in Felsogod, Hungary; and were blessed with their daughter, Ilona. After the Russian invasion of Hungary, they fled their home and possessions and left on foot on a harrowing journey until they reached Austria and freedom. As refugees they migrated to a new life in the United States, arriving in the USA aboard the USNS General Leroy Ettinge during the early morning hours of January 1st 1957. Because of a violent storm on the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was delayed for their planned New Year’s Eve ceremonial arrival and welcome by Officials and a Military Band. Many weeks later, Amalia and her family were welcomed and assisted by the wonderful people of the Wildemere Beach Congregation Church. She and her husband Norbie worked tirelessly to establish themselves in a new land with the help of their friends.

Amalia loved her family and enjoyed family gatherings and celebrations of all kinds. She had a sweet tooth, so all events were sure to have some type of cake or cookies brought by her or family. In her home, she always had cookies or candy stashed in a drawer here or there that her grandchildren and later great-grandchildren eagerly went on a search for. These stashes of sweets earned her the beloved nickname of Candy Grandma!

A kind and loving person, she was always willing to help above and beyond what was asked of her. She didn’t think twice about going out of her way to the next town over to pick up a friend to take them to an appointment or to church. Amalia loved to lunch with her friends from church which usually took place after church at Pop’s Restaurant or at a Chinese restaurant in town.

Amalia was a great cook and fed her family well. Her chicken soup was the best and her Chicken Paprikash was outstanding–especially when she made homemade nokedli (aka spaetzle). She made the best poppyseed and nut rolls—always a staple during the holiday season. But she is best known for her stuffed cabbage which was almost always requested from her for many family gatherings.

Amalia was an extremely active parishioner of Milford Christian Church. She was a member of their nursing home ministry, bible study group and home fellowship gatherings, and even sang in the choir. Amalia was an avid gardener and enjoyed planting her flowers and watching them bloom. She was quite fond of animals and had many dogs over the years. Amalia traveled often with her friends; around the country and also into Canada. She treasured the time she spent with her family, especially precious moments with her great grandchildren.

Amalia leaves behind her daughter, Ilona Bohn and her husband James; grandchildren, Dan Bohn and his wife Joy, Covey Bohn and his wife Christine and Justin Bohn; and great grandchildren, Wolfe and Aidan Bohn, River and Ryder Bohn, Alexis, Valencia and Alareice Bohn, Asia Ellianna and Krysta Bohn, and Nadia and Danny Bufi.

Memorial Service will be held on June 26, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at Berean Assembly of God AKA Milford Christian Church. 989 New Haven Avenue. Milford, Connecticut.

Gambino, Lorraine R.

Aug. 15, 1923 ~ June 3, 2021

Lorraine R. Gambino of Orange, age 97 passed away peacefully at home, hand in hand with her son by her side on June 3, 2021. She was the loving wife of the late Robert J. “Bob” Gambino. Born on August 15, 1923 in Lawrence, MA the daughter of the late Emile and Emma Dube Raymond. Lorraine is survived by son Robert J. Gambino Jr., daughter Denise Gambino Halstead, son-in-law Russell Halstead and her cherished granddaughter Alexis Lee Halstead all of Orange, CT. Lorraine was predeceased by her siblings Alphonso & Robert Raymond, Gertrude R. Cardone, Theresa R. Dini, Dorothy R. Tacinelli and Claudette R. Hunt.

After graduating High School, while taking care of her younger siblings, Lorraine attended one year of Business School at night enabling her to become a private secretary while working at the United Illuminating Company. While appearing numerous times within the U.I. News magazine, including her work as secretary for the Sunshine Fund and singer in the U.I. Girls’ Chorus; Lorraine not only appeared on the cover of the January-February 1955 U.I. News magazine, but was also highlighted in a four page article entitled “A Nimble Thimble” written by Marion Lake. “Paris may have its Schiaparelli and New York its Anne Fogartym, but UI has Lorraine Raymond whose wardrobe merits the admiration of all her co-workers. It’s no wonder, for Lorraine’s clothes are as original and professional in appearance as those by some of the top-flight designers. By day, a secretary in New Haven Operations, who believes neat appearance is part of her job, Lorraine spends many evenings creating her good looking outfits. Hers is truly a ‘nimble thimble.'” Not only was Lorraine a gifted seamstress, but also a gifted knitter, known to knit for friends and relatives on birthdays and Christmas.

Lorraine left the U.I. after many years to start a family in the home she and husband Bob built which she so truly loved. Lorraine remained at home bringing up her children; being involved in all aspects of their lives. From sporting events, to a member of the local PTA, to Mother’s Circle, Lorraine made sure she was fully immersed in parenting. Lorraine believed mothering was the most important aspect in the family structure, and took it very seriously. Always the first to get up in the morning and the last to lay her head on her pillow at night; until her children were old enough for her to reenter the work force. Lorraine retired from the VA Medical Center after 25 years of dedicated service to the United States Government as a Statistical Assistant. Having a strong work ethic, Lorraine instilled this virtue upon her children. Christmas was Lorraine’s favorite time of year. Christmas Day family gatherings was a marvel of wonderment and accomplishment. Given all the food was prepared and presented by her. While known for her great cooking, this was mirrored in her baking ability; baking no less than 25 different varieties of Christmas cookies for all to enjoy.

While husband Bob was a member of the Lions Club of Orange for over 50 years having served as its President. Lorraine was involved in all the “behind the scenes” action; including serving at the annual Thanksgiving Dinner opened to everyone; but their target guests are the town’s elders, shut-ins, and all those in need of good food and fellowship. Lorraine was a long time parishioner of Holy Infant Church and a longtime member of the Catholic Women’s Guild. A modest lady by definition was Lorraine’s unconditional love and dedication to what she believed in, which is what made Lorraine a living treasure!

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 8 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM, at West Haven Funeral Home at the green. Lorraine’s funeral procession will leave the funeral home on Wednesday, June 9, at 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Holy Infant Church at 11 o’clock. Interment will follow in Orange Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contribution may be made in Lorraine’s name to Holy Infant Church, 450 Racebrook Road, Orange, CT 06477. Virginia (Ginnie) retained a deep love for the Milford community and beaches. As a youngster, she was known as one of the beach kids and most of her life she would enjoy a daily swim in Long Island Sound, otherwise it was a daily drive to the shore.

Ginnie was a graduate of the 1953 Class of Milford High School fully enjoying the high-school life of academia and activities. She remained an avid reader quenching her curiosity and hunger to know. As she grew up, she took on every role as needed: teacher, organizer, worship leader, deacon (member or chairperson), council president, and prayer partner to many. She also shared her profound love of music as a choir director, pianist and singer.

Some years following her retirement, Ginnie decided to sell the family home and move to Demaio Gardens where she lived the last ten years. She quickly became a beloved member of the community. She shared in hosting visits with children from the Foundation School, attended community dinners, weekly bingo games and Bible studies. All the while she didn’t miss her daily trips to the beach. During her last months, Virginia was fortunate to have kind neighbors and friends to take her on her daily drive to sit and enjoy the water.

Virginia’s favorite word was “joy” – which she brought to others as a true friend and oftentimes a mentor. She was quick to support and encourage others with a kind word or written note and her volunteer activities extended to both her church and community.

Virginia was one of three sisters, the late Gloria Flaherty of Oakhurst, CA and survived by Barbara Crossman of Oak Harbor, WA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children from Arizona, Missouri, California and Washington.

Lozada-Stevens, Priscilla

Priscilla Lozada-Stevens, 65, of Milford, passed away peacefully and entered eternal rest on June 5, 2021. Born on July 20, 1955 in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late Christobal & Lydia Ortiz-Lozada. And predeceased by her Uncle Juan Lozada whom she loved dearly.

There was never a fight she shied away from or could not win. She was fighter and a winner, and she lived her life like that. Priscilla took life by the horns and rode it all the way to the top of the corporate ladder in finance. The impact she made on our lives, whether it be positive or negative she taught us all a lesson in one way other another. Priscilla was not only someone to go to if you needed someone in your corner, but she was also there if you just needed to talk. She was so loving and caring; her smile was so contagious it would light up the room.

If you needed anything she would always put your problems ahead of her own. That on its own has made her so special to everyone. The keen wit and unique sense of humor made her one of a kind.

I am sure we have all heard her say, “Yeah bitch, that was a triple” (Even though she knew a homerun was better). Or her famous “For fun, shits, and giggles.” She loved her Yankees because she was a winner just like them, steam rolling anything her path. Plus, she always shared how stick ball was her favorite thing to do when she a kid. Then her, her sisters, and friends would take a dime or two and go get enough candy to rot their teeth.

Priscilla loved telling stories of all her accomplishments and life experiences traveling the world and going on cruises with her lifelong love, Bob.

What Priscilla loved the most was watching her boys play hockey. RJ and Alexander can still hear her yelling and swearing at us to move our feet. She always said she was happiest when we were on the ice because it made her so proud to see us excel at something she never did herself.

Priscilla leaves behind her sons, Robert James Stevens and Alexander; his wife Kathy Stevens; siblings, Margaret Acosta, Stephanie Lozada-Vasquez, and Miriam Perez. The nephew and niece, Noel Acosta, Jr. and Priscilla Soto as well as many more nieces and nephews. Lifelong best friend Maria Seaman and dear friend Eddie Pinto. And Mike Sheridan whom she loved talking about her NY Yankees with and was like a third son. As well as her four-legged friend, Brady (whom she treated like a fury grandchild); and many friends and extended family.

Family and friends may gather from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at the CODY-WHITE FUNERAL HOME, 107 BROAD ST., MILFORD.

Theriault, Helen Sandra

Helen Sandra Theriault, of Milford, Connecticut, devoted wife, mother and Grammy, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2021.

Sandy, as she was known by all, was born on July 18, 1943, in Stamford, CT. Older sister to Frank “Chip” Slimak, Jr, she was the best big sister a brother could have asked for. Sandy graduated from Milford High School in 1961. From there, she began working full time, and at her second full time job, met a friend who would introduce her to the love of her life, Ky.

To Sandy, family was everything. After having her five children, she was a stay at home mom for many years; truly one of the most difficult jobs there is; especially with five small children. While it must have been exhausting at times, she always made it look easy. During these years, she was also actively involved in the Seabreeze School PTA and in the lives of her children and their friends. She welcomed all who entered into her home with open arms, and made each and every person feel valued, loved and protected. Her patience, creativity and sense of humor were unparalleled.

After retiring, Sandy enjoyed reading, traveling with her husband, Ky, and spending time with her grandchildren. As amazing of a parent as she was, Sandy was an equally spectacular Grammy. The twinkle in her eyes and look of pure love each time she saw any one of her grandchildren could light up a room.
Predeceased by her husband Ky last year, she leaves behind her five children: Anne-Marie (Kendall) Alderman, Greg (Diana) Theriault, Julianne (Raymond) Cianciullo, Michelle (Scott) San Antonio, and Paul Theriault (Monique Atherton).
She also leaves behind her 10 grandchildren, Emily Alderman, Kathryn Alderman, Michael Alderman, Hannah Rose Theriault, Mason Theriault, Oliver Theriault, Maria Cianciullo, Gabriel San Antonio, Dante San Antonio, and Carmine San Antonio.
In addition, she leaves behind her brother, Frank John “Chip” Slimak, Jr. (Rose Kern).
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at Our Lady Star of the Sea in Stamford, Connecticut. Masks and social distancing will be required.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to St. Joseph Indian School (In Lieu of Flowers – St. Joseph’s Indian School), a charity near and dear to her heart.
