Barash, MD, Paul G.

Paul G. Barash, MD, passed away peacefully at home in Orange, CT on Monday, June 8, at age 78. He leaves behind Norma, his beloved wife of 53 years, his cherished family, including sons David (Shari) and Jed (Gillian), grandchildren Seth, Leah, Henry, and Jack, sister Ellen Kaiden (Jeff), as well as countless friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Rose and A. Malcolm Barash, and his dear son, Daniel.

A giant in the field of anesthesia, Paul was Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology at the Yale University School of Medicine. He previously served as Chair of the Department, as well as Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs. Teaching and mentoring were at the heart of Paul’s distinguished career. He was a gifted educator, whether in the operating room with residents or in a large lecture hall to hundreds of participants. In recognition of this skill, he was chosen by the residents at Yale as the 2004 Teacher of the Year; a teaching award in anesthesiology was subsequently named in his honor. “PB,” as he was affectionately known, selflessly mentored numerous chairs and section chiefs, and encouraged younger physicians in anesthesiology at the faculty, fellow, and resident level. Paul was Chair of the Multicenter Study for Perioperative Ischemia (McSPI), one of the largest clinical investigations of perioperative cardiovascular complications. He was also a founding member and President of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and served as a Senior Examiner for the certification process of the American Board of Anesthesiology. He contributed to the establishment of an anesthesiology training program in Armenia following a devastating earthquake in 1988 and served as a consultant to NASA on Perioperative Medicine for Manned Space Flight.

Paul was a prolific author with over 180 peer reviewed publications and 130 meeting abstracts, but was perhaps best known in his field as the Senior Editor of the Clinical Anesthesia series of textbooks. A creative thinker, he played a critical role in the development of both an award-winning interactive CD and the first anesthesia software designed specifically for handheld devices.

Raised in Forest Hills, NY, Paul graduated from City College and the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He interned at Kings County Medical Center in Brooklyn before serving in the United States Public Health Service, in Division of Indian Health in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He then completed his residency training at Yale, where he was Chief Resident and remained for his academic career.

Paul will be long remembered for being a true mensch. He was charismatic, funny, kind, thoughtful, and generous with his time in guiding others on medical issues. He was happiest when spending time with his family, joining the Congregation Or Shalom minyan group, serving his town on the Board of Health, playing “challenge the chef” at restaurants, driving his convertible, traveling the world (then making photo albums of his trips), and rooting for the Yankees.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Dan Barash Scholarship at the University of Colorado Law School; Paul led his family’s efforts to support dedicated students there who continue to carry on his son’s legacy as a public defender.

Funeral and burial will be private. Robert E. Shure & Son Funeral Home of New Haven is in charge of the arrangements.

To this day three generations of his family still make “the Island” their summer destination. Olsen, Betty

Betty Olsen, age 78 of Orange passed away on July 10 at Lord Chamberlain Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Stratford, where she resided since fall 2019, and was affectionately known as “Queen of the Manor.” Born in Brooklyn, New York on May 2, 1942 to the late Elinor and Kiler Kristiansen, she lived at 917 55th Street until she wed the love of her life, Arthur (Art) Olsen of 56th Street. They began married life at 921 55th Street in an apartment across the alley from Betty’s childhood home. Betty was active in the 59th Street Lutheran Brethren Church, where she sang in the choir and participated in women’s ministries. In Brooklyn, she also made many friends who remained close throughout her life. A 1960 graduate of Fort Hamilton High School, Betty worked on Wall Street as an executive secretary for six years. Upon moving to 466 Skyline Drive in Orange in 1976, Betty made many new, dear friends in the neighborhood, at church, and everywhere she went. Her life was a living example of Hebrews 13:16, “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Known for her hospitality, kindness and giving spirit, Betty was always the first to welcome new visitors to church. She sent hand-written cards for every occasion, cooked and delivered meals to the sick and shut-ins and thanked veterans for their service. Her areas of expertise included household management, events planning and operations. A member of Trinity Church in Woodbridge for 44 years, Betty chaired the deaconess board for close to 20. Her skills were on display when she planned and managed Trinity’s annual Christmas concert receptions, serving 750 people during three separate events in the span of a weekend. She was also a beloved Sunday School teacher to many children. Betty played basketball in Brooklyn, women’s soccer in Connecticut, and was an avid Mets fan in the 80s. More recently, her devotion turned to the Cubs, and during the past months, she spent afternoons watching throwback baseball games or game shows. From the couch, she could solve Wheel of Fortune puzzles with just one letter on the board, and she was unbeatable at Scrabble. While not high tech, Betty’s record management system in the form of yellow note pads meant she could tell you what she served you for dinner on October 10 of 1982. Extremely proud of her Norwegian heritage, Viking Strong describes her spirit to fight lung cancer these past two years, and the strength with which she battled and beat breast cancer when she was in her 40s, with God’s help. Betty will be greatly missed by her friends and all who loved her, and especially by her family. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Art Olsen of Orange, daughter Cindy Olsen of Chicago and son Kevin (wife, Casey) Olsen of Bethany; and sister Sylvia (husband, Tom) Rasmussen of Idaho. Friends are invited to greet the family on Tuesday, July 14 from 4 to 7 p.m. in THE GREGORY F. DOYLE FUNERAL HOME, 291 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford. Burial will be private. Richetelli, Maureen, Coyne

Maureen Coyne Richetelli, 76, of Milford, beloved wife of the late James L. Richetelli, Sr., passed away peacefully on June 22, 2020 at home with her family and friends by her side. Born on September 18, 1943 in Yonkers, NY she was the daughter of the late Warren and Mary (O’Neill) Coyne.

Maureen grew up in a large, close-knit Irish family in Yonkers. Her family moved to Stratford, Connecticut in 1952 and she graduated from St. James School. They then crossed the bridge to Milford in 1957 to their home on the corner of East Broadway and Pearl Street on Silver Beach. She always considered herself a “beach kid”. She graduated from Milford High School in the class of 1961. Since graduation, she has attended every class reunion and has kept in touch with many classmates who became life-long friends.

While in high school, Maureen was introduced to the love of her life, Jim Richetelli, Sr. It truly was love at first sight. They were married on April 8, 1961. They worked hard and made many sacrifices while raising their six children. The Richetelli home was chaotic at times but always filled with love and laughter and everyone was welcome there. Maureen and Jim were married for 29 wonderful years when, sadly, Jim passed away suddenly on February 2, 1990 at the age of 46. Through her faith and love for her family she persevered and became the rock and pillar of the family.

Maureen worked as a Records Clerk for the Milford Police Department for more than 30 years before retiring in 2014. Besides her family and career, her passion was her Irish heritage. With the help of her beloved cousin, Peggy O’Neill, they researched and verified their family roots in Ireland. This resulted in Maureen being granted dual citizenship in the United States and Ireland on October 15, 2002, for which she was immensely proud of. Maureen’s love for all things Irish carried over into the Milford community. In 2006, she attended the first organizational meeting of the Irish Heritage Society of Milford (IHSM) and is a Charter Member of the club. She was a former member of the Board of Trustees and a member and the Chairwoman of many club committees, including the IHSM Scholarship Committee. In 2011, Maureen was named the Irish Woman of the Year in Milford.

Maureen was a woman of great faith and was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary Parish (now Precious Blood) for the entire time she lived in Milford. She was a woman of great values and high standards and expected the same from those she loved. Her family and friends meant everything to her. She took great joy in her elaborate holiday dinners and famous St. Patrick’s Day parade party that everyone will dearly miss. Maureen’s love and spirit will live on in the hearts of all that she touched.

Maureen is survived by her devoted children, James L. Richetelli, Jr. (Lisa), Patricia A. Firmender (Randy), Kevin M. Richetelli (Penny), Dennis C. Richetelli (Dawn), Eileen M. Richetelli, Christopher P. Richetelli and daughter-in-law, Dorinda Richetelli; loving grandchildren, Michelle, Julie and James, III (Gina) Richetelli; Kyle, Eric, Colin and Bryan Firmender; Nicole and Danielle Richetelli; Kathryn and Andrew Richetelli; Tristan and Skylar Crozier; and great-granddaughter, Peyton Rose Richetelli. She is also survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Fred and Ellen Richetelli, many dear cousins, nieces, nephews and so many very special friends. Besides her parents and husband, Maureen was predeceased by her brothers, Rev. Edwin J. Coyne and Warren J. Coyne; and her cherished sister, Patricia A. Hiebert. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Maureen’s caregiver and friend, Mary Foley Masterson, for her compassion, kindness and love for the last year.
